Imagine fleeing your home with little more than the clothes on your back, driven away by threats of violence simply because you stood for things we often take for granted: equality and education. This is the reality for an Afghan family of six that we want to help, who had to escape Kabul, Afghanistan, in 2021. The father, the principal of an all-female English school, was a champion of girls' and women's rights to education. His dedication placed his entire family in grave danger under the Taliban regime, forcing them to flee.

Now living as refugees in Pakistan, the family is trapped in an unsafe environment. Refugee camps, particularly for Afghan families, are fraught with dangers, especially for women and girls. Their only hope for a better life is to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Members of James Bay United Church have come together as a group and are trying to help the family come to Canada.  We invite you to learn more about this courageous family and how we as a community can help them.  You’re invited to a presentation and dinner of Afghan food on November 30 at 6 pm, in the lower hall of the church along with a silent auction.  The recommended offering for the meal is $20 per plate. Any donation over and above $20 will receive a tax receipt.

You’ll meet the eldest sister, who now lives in the Lower Mainland and is desperate to help her parents and younger siblings who remain behind. You’ll also hear how a friendly conversation on a Skytrain ride was the first step in making huge changes for this family.

If you’re interested in joining this evening of hope and action, please contact D’Arcy McPherson at darcymcpherson.victoria@gmail.com.

Together, we can help reunite this family and build a brighter, safer future.
