This week we begin our lay-led Summer EnLightenment series drawing upon Barbara Brown Taylor’s book “Holy Envy — Finding God in the Faith of Others”. We will hear how, in teaching a Religion 101 class at a small liberal arts college in Georgia, her Christian journey is enriched by the inspiration — indeed “holy envy” — that she experiences through aspects of various other world religions. Join us for this expansive worship experience!
Presiding: Anne Manikel
Reflection Reader: Sarah Hovey
Scripture: Psalm 138 (an excerpt from Nan C. Merrill’s “Psalms for Praying”)
Read responsively by Karen Halliday:
I give you thanks, O Blessed One, with all my heart;
before all the people I sing your praise;
I was humbled when I came to see that You dwell in me,
in the Holy Temple of all souls;
my gratitude knows no bounds!
For You are the Holy one, the Breath of our breath.
On the day that I called, You answered me;
the strength of my soul You increased.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
You preserve my life;
You are a very Presence as I face my fears and doubts;
Your strength upholds me.
You guide me as I pray to fulfill my purpose on earth;
You do not forsake those who call upon You.
Your steadfast love and truth endures forever.

Our worship each Sunday is intended to be a collective experience, a communal practice. We might step into whatever is our sanctuary, each one of us as individuals, and yet as we assemble, from wherever we are, we become a people, drawn together through song and prayer, through word and ritual, and through the Spirit who breathes through it all, through us all. One and the same Spirit uniting us breathing us into life!
