NOTE SPECIAL DAY AND TIME: Saturday, May 21, 7PM
Saxophonist, composer and jazz pioneer John Coltrane created a sound and philosophy of music that shifted the whole of jazz, not once but arguably 3 times in his life.
Celebrating Coltrane's sound, music and legacy with the award-winning, Montreal saxophonist Alan McLean, and Victoria's own Tony Genge, Brock Medes & Kelby MacNayr!
From distilling the sounds, style and legacy from earlier generations of the greats and making his own mark with albums like Soultrane, Bluetrane and in collaboration with Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, to his Legendary quartet with accomplices Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner and Jimmy Garrison and his later, increasingly spiritually seeking music, Coltrane would change the face and future of jazz.
Equal parts history, personal exploration and collaboration with his fellow musicians, each of 'Trane's creative periods created something distilled, unique and powerful. In this special presentation we explore Coltrane's music from 1958 onwards, essentially in his middle artistic period.
To celebrate the music of Coltrane, the performers must be free and flexible within the lexicon of the music to do justice to the sound and legacy of 'Trane and be free to personally explore and create with the same openness that 'Trane brought to his music.
Such a venture requires - to state the obvious - a tenor saxophonist of remarkable virtuosity and ability but whom also seeks the expression of their own heart and creative spirit within the music. In Montreal's Al McLean, MacNayr has found just that. A musician who is unquestionably one of the world's foremost authorities on the music of John Coltrane, who speaks fluently the language created by Coltrane and is free to express his own musical passion and creativity.
In the words of "Celebrating the jazz giant John Coltrane is huge endeavour and something I would probably only undertake with Alan McLean on tenor"
